The outdoors is the original prepared environment.
Before classrooms and formal lessons, children learned through movement, observation, experimentation, relationship, risk, wonder, and participation in real life. Human development was shaped in direct relationship with the natural world, and children still carry those developmental needs today.
What we often call “outdoor learning” is not really separate from education at all. The environment itself sparks curiosity and imagination. A puddle invites physics. A seed invites biology. A stick becomes engineering, storytelling, measurement, collaboration, and art all at once.
The role of the adult is not to force predetermined outcomes, but to observe carefully, recognise the developmental threads emerging through children’s activity, and help deepen understanding through conversation, research, writing, mathematics, art, and scientific exploration.
The indoor classroom is not separate from the outdoor environment. It is often a place for reflection, abstraction, and refinement built upon concrete experiences children have already lived.
In our Infant Community and Children’s House, children build understanding through direct sensorial experiences: planting seeds, carrying water, preparing food, observing insects, feeling changing weather, and noticing seasonal change. These experiences are not extras. They are foundational.
For Elementary children, outdoor spaces become living laboratories for exploring ecosystems, geography, physics, ethics, and interdependence. Questions emerge naturally because the world itself presents problems to solve and patterns to notice.
For adolescents, meaningful outdoor work becomes even more essential. Caring for animals, maintaining spaces, growing food, and running market businesses offer real responsibility and contribution. Through this, young people develop competence, resilience, collaboration, self-belief, and purpose alongside academic understanding.
This matters deeply when we consider the world children are growing into.
Educational researchers and organisations such as the World Economic Forum consistently identify resilience, adaptability, creativity, collaboration, problem solving, initiative, emotional intelligence, communication, and systems thinking as essential capacities for the future. These are not skills easily developed through passive instruction or standardisation. They emerge through meaningful participation in complex, real environments.
The outdoors develops these capacities naturally.
Resilience grows when children encounter challenge, discomfort, unpredictability, and the need to persevere. Flexibility develops because nature is constantly changing, requiring children to adapt and think dynamically. Creativity flourishes in open-ended environments where imagination is invited to participate.
Collaboration becomes meaningful because outdoor work is genuinely interdependent. Building shelters, caring for animals, preparing gardens, and resolving disagreements all require communication, empathy, leadership, and shared responsibility.
Problem solving becomes authentic because the problems are real: How do we stop water flooding the path? Why are the plants not growing? Why are the goats behaving differently today? Children learn that knowledge exists to help us navigate life, not simply pass tests.
Systems thinking develops powerfully outdoors because children can directly observe interconnectedness in action: weather affecting soil, soil affecting plants, plants affecting insects, and human choices influencing ecosystems. They begin to understand that actions have consequences and that they are part of larger living systems.
Perhaps most importantly, outdoor environments support wellbeing in ways modern childhood increasingly struggles to provide. Movement, fresh air, sunlight, sensory integration, practical work, social connection, and meaningful contribution are not luxuries for children. They are developmental necessities.
Montessori education reminds us that children are not designed to learn primarily through passive instruction. They construct understanding through active engagement with the world around them. The richer and more meaningful the environment, the deeper and more connected the learning becomes.
At EMAS, children are fortunate to experience daily contact with nature through the paddock, nursery garden, our nature classroom, animal areas, mud kitchen, market garden, and the many natural spaces woven throughout the grounds. These spaces are far more than school grounds. They are carefully prepared educational environments: intentional, evolving, and alive with possibility.
Prepared environments are never static. They evolve through observation, reflection, and the changing developmental needs of the children using them. As always in Montessori education, observation remains central. We continue to watch carefully, listen deeply, and adapt our environments in response to the needs and developmental stages of each group.
Because ultimately, the goal is not simply to prepare children for school.
It is to prepare them for life.
